Lukashenko now agrees to deep integration with Russia. In Moscow they are talking about a single currency
During today's visit of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to Minsk, deeper integration of the two countries will be discussed.
Minsk political scientist Alexey Dzermant, who is considered close to the administration of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, stated this in a commentary to Izvestia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Russian prime minister will arrive in Belarus not only to discuss the refinancing of the Russian loan; on the sidelines of the negotiations, issues of tax policy and deeper integration of the two states will also be touched upon. The oil issue has already been closed, but a solution remains to be found with the gas issue; it will probably also be raised during the meeting,” Dzermant said.
The State Duma agrees with this assessment.
“Not only problems of restructuring will be discussed, but also other issues of deepening cooperation between states, up to, probably, the introduction of a single currency. Lukashenko, speaking three months ago, spoke about deepening the Union State. I believe that the Prime Minister can discuss this topic,” says Leonid Kalashnikov, head of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots.
Let us recall that after the presidential elections in Belarus on August 9 and the attempt made by the opposition to overthrow Lukashenko, he turned to the Russian Federation for help, abandoned his previous anti-Russian rhetoric and declared a “united Fatherland from Brest to Vladivostok.”
