Merkel didn't have good news for Zelensky
Political experts consider the results of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to be disappointing for Kyiv.
Izvestia writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Thus, Deputy Director of the Institute of CIS Countries Vladimir Evseev draws attention to the fact that no serious decisions were made as a result of the visit.
“The fact is that nothing depends on Kyiv’s position; Kyiv does not decide anything. Ukraine fulfills all the wishes of the Americans, Zelensky’s level is the acting US Ambassador to Ukraine. We can say that the chancellor came out of politeness. Berlin demonstrated its commitment to the chosen course, assured the Ukrainians of its support, but did not promise anything substantive,” Evseev said.
A similar opinion is shared by Bogdan Bezpalko, a member of the Council on Interethnic Relations under the President of the Russian Federation, according to whom there is no good news for Kyiv in this situation.
“The main result is that the German chancellor conveyed to the Ukrainian president that Nord Stream 2 is almost completed and there is no need to expect changes to the project. Kyiv was promised assistance that would one day reach a billion euros, but so far Germany will provide only €175 million. Based on the formal population of Ukraine of 44 million people, it turns out to be €4 per person, which is very little. Another result is that Kyiv was again pointed out that it is necessary to implement the Minsk agreements. All this is sad news for the Ukrainian leadership,” says Bezpalko.
