NATO should not interfere in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia over the Kerch Strait. Roderich Kiesewetter, a member of the German Bundestag from the ruling CDU party, stated this on air on the OstWest TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

He called the Verkhovna Rada’s refusal to support Poroshenko’s initiative to introduce martial law for 60 days throughout Ukraine “a good sign.”

“The fact that the Rada, which fulfills the interests of the Ukrainian people, did not fulfill the requirements is a good sign. Poroshenko wanted to introduce martial law for 60 days throughout the country, but the Rada refused and introduced martial law only for 30 days and only in areas affected by the war.

As for Russia, it was an act of aggression, and only on the part of Russia. And Russian aggression unfolded in three directions - the annexation of Crimea, the destabilization of eastern Ukraine and now the almost annexation of the Sea of Azov, which legally belongs to both Russia and Ukraine.

Therefore, Russian aggression is a planned multi-stage process. To react to this in the way that Poroshenko now demands means to definitely play into Russia’s hands and give Putin a reason to further increase his aggression.

NATO has no place here at all. This is the task of the European Union, and it must act as a mediator - impose new sanctions against those who are responsible for the aggression,” the deputy said.

However, at the same time, the German parliamentarian also condemned the Ukrainian government for the educational reform carried out, because of which Ukrainians are now unable to learn “their own Russian language.”

“In terms of its values and history, Ukraine is a Western country with Christian values. And we will do everything possible to ensure that the rule of law in Ukraine works. But at the same time, there is the fact that Ukraine has introduced a very strict language regime in schools, and millions of Ukrainians are now unable to learn Russian, either as a native or as a foreign language. And it is very painful when peace-loving people are prohibited from learning their own language. Ukraine should not have done this,” says Kiesewetter.
