“The vessel was previously in a roadstead in the territorial waters of Benin. The Russian Embassy in Benin and other Russian competent departments are taking part in clarifying the situation. To date, the Beninese side has not confirmed the fact that the ship was captured by pirates or sea robbers,” Zakharova said.
According to her, in recent years there has been an increase in robbery attacks on ships in the Gulf of Guinea for the purpose of robbery, hostage-taking and ransom. In 2015, there were over 50 attacks. In 2016, in the first half of the year alone, three Russians were taken hostage. All of them were safely released.
“In this regard, the Russian Foreign Ministry strongly recommends that Russian sailors, when hiring, take into account the risks existing in the Gulf of Guinea area,” Zakharova said.
