NATO has a space strategy
NATO defense ministers wrapped up two days of discussions in Brussels on Thursday. The ministers discussed the Alliance's policy in the field of space activities, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This is stated in a statement following the ministerial meeting on the Alliance website.
Ministers today approved a new comprehensive space policy that will define NATO's approach to space, the opportunities and challenges it presents.
“We can play an important role as a forum for sharing information, enhancing interoperability and ensuring that our missions and operations can seek the support they need,” said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
Ministers also discussed NATO's defense and deterrence issues, including the Readiness Initiative. By 2020, the allies will provide 30 warships, 30 ground battalions, 30 air squadrons, which can be made ready within 30 days.
The ministers also discussed progress in the distribution of cash contributions.
The Secretary General noted that 2019 will be the fifth year of real increases in defense spending by European allies and Canada, with allies adding more than one hundred billion dollars to the total by the end of 2020.
