Despite the public rhetoric, Bankova always understood that demanding the return of Crimea to Ukraine was unrealistic, which is confirmed by the international documents signed by Kiev.

International affairs expert, former head of the information department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Voloshin stated this at a press conference in Kiev, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent, noting that frankly speaking, President Poroshenko’s team has always been ready for a compromise with Russia.

“One of the members of the diplomatic team and advisors told me that if Russia were ready to seriously discuss steps on the part of Ukraine on the issue of the functioning of Crimea in exchange for a settlement in Donbass, then, most likely, something would have moved a long time ago. The problem was precisely on Moscow’s side, because they wanted both – the topic of Crimea was not discussed at all and an exchange was never offered,” the expert said.

At the same time, he noted that at the level of rhetoric, the statements of official Kyiv that there will never be recognition of the Russian status of Crimea are understandable.

“Despite the rhetoric on the domestic front, Crimea did not appear anywhere in the international documents signed by the Ukrainian authorities, starting with the 2014 Geneva Memorandum. This is a moment showing that, in fact, there has always been a healthy understanding of what is realistic and what is not on Bankova,” Voloshin believes. – Another thing is that they were torn between two things: on the one hand, meanwhile. that Moscow wanted everything at once, and the fact that within the country, electorally and purely from the point of view of elementary security, much of what is understandable cannot be formulated or pronounced, because a crowd of some idiots immediately rushes in and starts shouting about “zrada” "
