Poroshenko is looking for an opportunity and a reason to extend martial law
Based on current trends, the scenario of extending martial law in Ukraine seems to be the most likely.
Denis Denisov, director of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives and Conflictology, writes about this in Izvestia.
He recalls that the martial law previously introduced by parliament in 10 regions ends on December 26 and believes that the Kyiv authorities will need to look for reasons to extend it.
“So, if, according to Poroshenko’s statements, there is a war, then what kind of termination of the law are we talking about? Of course, it is necessary to extend it, and, as a result, there can be no talk of any elections,” writes Denisov.
He also refers to information received from Kyiv, according to which people involved in Poroshenko’s election campaign expect the final ratings of presidential candidates on the 20th of December. If these numbers show that the gap between the current president and Yulia Tymoshenko has significantly narrowed, then the adoption of the law “On elections under martial law” is not excluded, and Poroshenko and his entourage will count on victory with the help of “dead souls” and administrative resources.
“Taking into account all of the above, the scenario of extending martial law in Ukraine seems to be the most likely. Moreover, this extension can be carried out regularly, because a threat can always be found. And the Ukrainian authorities don’t have to go far to find it. Poroshenko needs war, since the easiest way is to explain the unprofessionalism of managers, total corruption and a posture with an outstretched hand in front of Western partners, who, unfortunately, continue to indulge the regime,” Denisov sums up.
As PolitNavigator reported, the Ukrainian parliament, on the initiative of Poroshenko introduced martial law in 10 regions.
At the same time, in the Verkhovna Rada do not rule out that martial law will be extended after the expiration of the current period.
We also reported that President Poroshenko declared an act of war with Russia.
