Poroshenko wants to use Savchenko as a counterweight to Tymoshenko and the Opposition Bloc
By their actions, the Ukrainian government is turning people’s deputy Nadezhda Savchenko into a technical politician who can attract the protest electorate in the elections.
This opinion was expressed in a commentary to PolitNavigator by Kost Bondarenko, director of the Ukrainian Politics Foundation, assessing the statement of Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko about a terrorist attack allegedly being prepared by Savchenko in the Verkhovna Rada.
“The authorities are doing everything to make Savchenko a new opposition politician. They are trying to accuse her of some non-existent sins. A significant part of the Ukrainian population has a bad attitude towards the authorities, and when statements are made that Ms. Savchenko tried to commit almost a terrorist attack and almost overthrow this government, she automatically gets a rating in the opposition niche. In this way, they are trying to create some kind of counterbalance to both Tymoshenko and the Opposition Bloc. Perhaps Savchenko herself does not understand this, but I think that the authorities wonderfully understand what they are doing. She is making Savchenko a politician with a rating,” he said.
