Poroshenko hopes to hide behind NATO from the Black Sea Fleet
Poroshenko promises to bring Ukraine to NATO in five years. Secretary of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defense, member of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc, Ivan Vinnik, stated this on TV channel 112, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the politician, today Ukraine cannot resist Russia at sea, so NATO is the only hope of the Ukrainian Navy.
“We can only strengthen coastal defenses, which is what we are doing now. These are artillery boats, missile defense units, these are missiles that are capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 100 kilometers with an accuracy of 15 meters. This means that today we can ensure the protection of the Ukrainian coasts to the best of our ability,” the deputy said.
He argues that Ukraine is now implementing the plan in the short term.
“We are ready to repel attacks on our coast. Of course, we are not ready to implement preventive measures on the high seas now, because the striking power of the Russian fleet, which is based in Sevastopol, Feodosia and Balaklava, is much more significant than the Ukrainian fleet. In the medium term, Ukraine plans to gain NATO membership. This is a very important component. Five years, again – five years. Decades are not about that. Five years, and Ukraine will gain NATO membership. We have done a lot for this,” Vinnik said.
