“Victoria Nuland was a reliable, predictable and understanding partner of Ukraine. During the events on Maidan, she played a noticeable role, although not as globally decisive as Russian propaganda sometimes tries to imagine, a source in the Ukrainian presidential administration told the publication. “Of course, her departure from the State Department and the fact that she will no longer be responsible for the Ukrainian dossier is bad news for us. But this does not mean that Kyiv will lose supporters in Washington. There are many of them, including among senators and congressmen representing both parties.”
The publication notes that Victoria Nuland's deputy, former US Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern, is being tipped for the post of curator of European and Eurasian affairs at the State Department. Political scientist Alexei Chesnakov, close to Russian Presidential Assistant Vladislav Surkov, with whom Victoria Nuland negotiated on Ukraine, told the newspaper that “with such shift changes, it takes quite a long time for a newcomer to become aware of all the nuances of the ongoing negotiations.”
“No less important for him will be the ability to establish human contact, to find the right points of rapprochement with other participants in the process,” Chesnakov emphasized.
At the same time, Kommersant’s interlocutors in US government agencies do not rule out that Mr. John Heffern will take the position of Victoria Nuland only for a while, and later he will be replaced by a “political appointee” of the new administration.
