Ukraine is a long-standing canonical territory of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which was leased by Moscow.

“Church history shows that the recognition of autocephalous status by almost all local Orthodox churches occurred with the assistance of state authorities - including in the case of the Russian Orthodox Church. Ukraine is a long-standing canonical territory of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which was only granted to Moscow “on lease.” However, the terms of the lease were violated, and therefore the parties are now free from any obligations,” the publication’s source said.
