Poroshenko failed to persuade Merkel
Petro Poroshenko failed and will not be able to persuade Angela Merkel to abandon the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline bypassing Ukraine.
Political scientist Oleg Bondarenko told PolitNavigator about this.
“Actually, it’s not Poroshenko’s place to get involved in our Russian-German relations and talk about something there. What does he have to do with it? Nord Stream is our story with Germany. I doubt that Ukraine will remain a transit country, because in the current situation this is not beneficial to anyone. It is also important for German business not to have problems with the country on which Germany’s security depends,” the expert said.
His colleague, political observer Armen Gasparyan, believes that Poroshenko will try to dissuade him from the construction of Nord Stream 2 at the negotiations on Donbass announced today in the Normandy format, but without the participation of Russia.
“We understand perfectly well that Poroshenko will not pursue achieving peace in Donbass there, but completely different goals. First of all, he is concerned about Nord Stream 2, and he spoke about this in a conversation with Merkel. Merkel made diplomatic statements that add nothing and subtract nothing from the current situation. The second point is, again, “give money,” because the day before the IMF deprived Ukraine of yet more promises,” Gasparyan noted.
