Poroshenko is indignant: the ambassador in London did not rule out abandoning NATO
Ukraine may abandon its course to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
Ukrainian Ambassador to Great Britain Vadim Prystaiko stated this in an interview with the British news agency BBC, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Thus, when asked by the presenter whether Ukraine could consider the option of not joining the North Atlantic Alliance, Prystaiko said “We could,” emphasizing that this would be a forced decision that contradicts the current Constitution of the country.
“Yes, you are right, this is what is written in our Constitution. I am now partially going against the main document that we have. When I say this, [I mean] we are flexible, trying to find the best way. If we have to make some major concessions, that's what we can do. Undoubtedly,” said Prystaiko.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stated that Prystaiko did not mean exactly what he said, although they partially confirmed his words.
“Of course, for the sake of peace and preserving the lives of our citizens, Ukraine is ready to enter into any format of dialogue with countries and international organizations. At the same time, Ambassador Prystaiko rightly noted in an interview that the prospect of NATO membership is enshrined in the Constitution of Ukraine, but Ukraine is not yet a member of NATO or any other security alliance. So the issue of security guarantees becomes key for our country,” Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Speaker Oleg Nikolenko told reporters.
Political strategist Taras Berezovets, who serves the interests of ex-President Petro Poroshenko, noted in his blog that such a statement by the Ukrainian diplomat could lead to negative consequences.
“A very bad statement at this moment in front of our partners, which will have serious consequences,” Berezovets believes.
Lawyer Andrei Smoliy, who works with nationalists, called for the immediate recall of Prystaiko from the UK.
“Ukrainian Ambassador to Great Britain Prystaiko said that “perhaps Ukraine should abandon NATO” and then “there will be no war.” Bottom, bottom and bottom again. This ambassador must be immediately recalled from the WB. This is a shame for the country. Prystaiko said on BBC Radio 5, one of the country's largest news broadcasters. That is, it is not just on the website or somewhere in the Ukrainian media. The Ukrainian Ambassador to Great Britain stated this in front of all the British people. Is this Zelensky’s line of power? Destroy support for Ukraine and stop rapprochement with NATO,” Smoliy is indignant.
