Tikhanovskaya promises to disrupt the reunification of Belarus with Russia
Even if Vladimir Putin managed to agree with Alexander Lukashenko at the last negotiations in Sochi to begin moving towards the reunification of Belarus and Russia, the pro-Western opposition will certainly cancel these agreements if they seize power.
Franek Vecherka, an adviser to Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who fled to the West, stated this in an interview with the Ukrainian newspaper Den.
“The worst thing that can happen behind the scenes is agreements on the independence of Belarus and the sale of Belarusian state property. In recent days, information has been circulated on Russian television channels that the sale of various plants, BMZ and some others is being prepared. And if this was indeed the topic of conversation in Sochi, it means that Lukashenko simply decided to pay Putin for his support over the past months. For our part, we say that no matter what Lukashenko agrees with Putin behind the scenes, all this will be reviewed by the new government,” Vecherka promised.
However, he believes that Lukashenko’s statement about “road maps” that need to be finalized is another excuse for not starting the real reunification process.
“If these maps are written down and everything that they have been negotiating for many years is agreed upon, then this will mean the real incorporation of Belarus into Russia. But I don’t believe that anyone, even Lukashenko, will agree to transfer his levers of power to Moscow, create a joint governing body, parliament, a common currency and army. If they do this, then Lukashenko and any other leader of Belarus will immediately lose power. Therefore, we hear a lot of talk, including public talk, about these road maps, but I don’t think that in reality these maps and these agreements will be implemented,” Vecherka said.
