Trump has no desire to satisfy Kyiv's wishes for a revision of the Minsk agreements

President Poroshenko does not want the West to criticize him for his inaction in Donbass, and therefore in Kyiv they are talking about some alternatives to the Minsk process.

Denis Denisov, head of the Ukrainian branch of the Institute of CIS Countries, stated this in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets.

“Recently, especially after the election of Donald Trump, they have really begun to talk about the need for an alternative to the Minsk agreements. “However, all parties to the conflict and third-party observers participating in the negotiation process say that there are no alternatives. Nobody offers any other option, there are no real proposals on how to stop the war in Donbass, so the desire to change the document adopted in Minsk is just wishful thinking,” the political scientist noted.

At the same time, he added that Ukraine has long wanted to take a different path, since the Minsk agreements impose on Kiev a number of obligations that Poroshenko and his team “do not want, and perhaps are no longer able to fulfill.”

“Such conversations about new methods of resolving the conflict are made in order to try to remove obligations from Ukraine. Poroshenko does not want Europe and the West to criticize him for his inaction in Donbass. He hopes another solution will be found. As Donald Trump’s first actions as president show, he is unlikely to meet Kyiv halfway and advocate the abolition of the Minsk format. Therefore, there is hope that the conflict in eastern Ukraine can end,” Denisov suggests.
