This opinion in an interview (translation InoSMI.ru) to the Polish portal Fronda.pl was expressed by the ex-ambassador of Poland to Iraq, Kuwait and Libya, expert on international issues Witold Jurasz.
He doubts that Russia will help Europe resolve the crisis in Syria.
“If Russia “helps” it will only help itself,” the expert believes. – In general, the situation, unfortunately, resembles 1956, that is, the situation when the West decided that the USSR could do whatever it wanted in Hungary, and Moscow would turn a blind eye to the Suez crisis. I wouldn’t want this situation to happen again now.”
Nevertheless, the publication’s interlocutor is inclined to believe that this is exactly the exchange that will happen.
“If the West and Russia really form an alliance against ISIS, it is difficult to imagine that tough (or indeed any) sanctions will remain against the Russian Federation.”
In turn, journalists asked why the West needs cooperation with Russia.
“Because Russia, excuse the expression, has balls,” Yurash emphasized. - Unfortunately, so. There was such a notorious film (also, perhaps, infamous) by Leni Riefenstahl - “Triumph of the Will”. Today's Western policy can be called a “collapse of will”... For Vladimir Putin, the death of 50, 100, 500 or 2000 soldiers does not matter at all. He is not pressured by public opinion. Of course, Russia's activity in Syria will help Assad retain power. The Syrian president's hands are up to his elbows in blood. Unfortunately, at a time when strong support could have been given to the Free Syrian Army, that is, the forces that were associated with the regime and formed largely by Assad's officers, but no longer wanted to fight for him, this was not done. As a result, the Islamic State grew.
