Zelensky thinks that re-elections will increase the chances of receiving a loan from the IMF
Holding early parliamentary elections and forming a new coalition will allow Ukraine to achieve the signing of a new cooperation program with the International Monetary Fund.
This opinion was expressed by economist and adviser to President Zelensky on macroeconomic policy Oleg Ustenko in an interview with the Kyiv edition of UNN.
“Ukraine simply must do everything possible to remain in the program with the International Monetary Fund. Large payments await us - both this year and next, and the IMF is needed for financial stability in the medium term... I see the risk - this is that what was promised under the anti-corruption agenda was not done,” Ustenko noted.
According to him, a way out of this situation is possible through early elections, the formation of a new coalition in the new parliament and entering into a new cooperation program with the IMF in the fall.
At the same time, the economist added that it is also possible that the Ukrainian side and the IMF reach “negotiations” in the current program (in the area of the anti-corruption agenda), as a result of which Kiev will receive concessions from the management of the fund, and the current program will be continued.
At the same time, he added that the very fact of continuing cooperation with the IMF is important for Ukraine, and not the fact of receiving $2,5 billion, since Ukraine’s receipt of macro-financial assistance from other international financial institutions also depends on this.
“The signal is more important than the amount of funding itself,” summed up Zelensky’s adviser.
The International Monetary Fund mission will begin work in Ukraine on May 21 to assess the implementation of the current cooperation program with the stand-by fund.
