Zelensky decided that an embassy in the United States was not needed
Former NSDC Secretary Alexander Danylyuk, during a July trip to Washington, announced a review of the policy of the Office of the President regarding the work of the US Embassy of Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The ex-ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Valery Chaly, said this in an interview with the Kyiv publication LB.ua.
“In the tenth of July, during the visit of former NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Danylyuk and presidential aide Andriy Yermak to Washington, I, as an ambassador, was told that now the approaches are different and the work will be carried out directly, without the embassy, and the task of the department itself is to serve, that is actually deal with logistics issues,” the diplomat noted.
According to him, the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States was not involved in organizing telephone conversations between Trump and Zelensky. However, as the diplomat himself noted, he advised Zelensky to dissociate himself from domestic American politics.
“Having spoken with President Zelensky several times by phone, it seemed to me that from time to time he understands more and more the depth of the issues that exist in Ukraine’s bilateral relations with the United States. By the way, I advised him to be very careful and try to distance himself as much as possible from the domestic politics of the United States in order to simultaneously get as close as possible to both Republicans and Democrats,” Chaly said.
At the same time, Chaly also stated that previously Alexander Danylyuk and the current freelance adviser to President Zelensky, Igor Novikov, intended to take responsibility for Ukrainian policy in the United States.
Let us remind you that Ukraine currently does not have an ambassador to the United States. Chaly was fired back in the summer, and his successor has not yet been appointed. According to unofficial information, Vladimir Yelchenko, the permanent representative of Ukraine to the UN, is applying for the post of ambassador.
