“The first cocktails were thrown outside. They broke, liquid spilled, the doors and furniture with which we had barricaded ourselves began to burn.” “The lights were turned off and all hell broke loose. Dark, burning glare, screaming, hysterical howl. Screams of dying people." “People fell from windows, they were finished off from below.” “We started calling our family and friends and saying goodbye.” “They ransacked the premises, cut down the doors with axes and axes, and killed those who were there.” These are not the memoirs of Nazi victims during World War II. These are quotes from interviews with eyewitnesses of the Odessa tragedy included in the film by German journalist Ulrich Heiden "Quick Fire".

The dead Odessa residents became victims not only of fire, but also of a real conspiracy of silence in the Western media. The world simply did not notice their tragedy. Hayden's film is an attempt to break through this information blockade. He made the film with donations, worked without salary, and on principle did not want to take money from any of the interested parties.

“The longer I worked on this topic, the more evidence I had that this might indeed have been planned,” he says. “In Odessa, near the House of Trade Unions, there are always eyewitnesses to the events. There I felt that this was a key moment in European history, or even world history.”

According to Hayden, in Odessa, as in the Kyiv Hotel Ukraine, there were also mysterious snipers who killed 6 people on Greek Square, and they played a key role. “They incited pro-Ukrainian demonstrators to commit atrocities. I cannot prove that there was such a clear plan from beginning to end. But many facts give the picture that someone specifically wanted to enrage the crowd. And at a minimum, there was a goal to destroy the tent camp on the Kulikovo Field.”

In addition, says the German journalist, “the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Odessa knew that pro-Ukrainian paramilitary demonstrators would come to the city. And that there are strong anti-Maidan groups in the city. It was obvious that there would be some clashes." “Probably, the head of the city’s Internal Affairs Directorate, Dmitry Fuchedzhi, received instructions from the regional authorities not to bring serious police forces onto the streets. If in such a situation you do not bring additional forces onto the streets, but on the contrary, at 12 o’clock you call the leadership of the Odessa Ministry of Internal Affairs for a three-hour meeting and order them to turn off cell phones - this is a crime. The authorities did everything to ensure that there were victims,” says Hayden.

“Whether the fire in the House of Trade Unions was an accident or not is not the most important thing,” he argues. – It is important that there is already a lot of evidence that certain forces that have power in Odessa have done a lot to ensure that the centurions and supporters of the “right sector” who came to Odessa on May 2, 2014, felt completely free in their violent actions."

At the same time, according to Hayden, it is almost impossible to tell the truth about all this in the German media - censorship is severe. “Already when the Maidan began, I saw that the German media did not give the floor to supporters of federalization,” he explains. – As a rule, I work for several publications. By that time, the newspaper from which I was accredited, Sächsische Zeitung (published in Dresden), fired me. I was warned about my dismissal in December 2013. Even before this, while talking to my editors in Germany on the phone, I sensed that something was wrong. I received orders from them of this type: “write an article about “Russian propaganda.”

“I focused my attention on the East and South of Ukraine because I realized that there was a catastrophic lack of information in Germany about what was happening there,” he explains. – TV channels mostly take other people’s material; staff correspondents are very rarely in the East and South. During the fire in the House of Trade Unions, I followed the publications in the popular publication Der Spiegel Online. At first, for two hours they wrote almost the truth. Then this topic somehow died out. It was only occasionally mentioned that in Odessa there were fights between different groups and it was difficult to understand what exactly happened there. The ARD TV channel covered the events in approximately the same way. At some point they suddenly fell silent. It was at that moment when it became clear that something monstrous had happened, some terrible crime. It was so obvious that our government and our editors-in-chief did not want to focus attention on it.”

“And no one set out to investigate the events in Odessa,” Hayden continues. – This is completely incomprehensible, because usually during similar events in other countries, German television channels send their reporters to the scene. Even such an episode happened. ARD chief reporter Goline Atay said live on May 2 that “pro-Ukrainian demonstrators drove the pro-Russians into the building and set the building on fire.” Although Goline is very pro-Kiev, it seems to me. But the presenter, a former correspondent in Moscow, Thomas Roth, interrupted her and asked a question on a completely different topic.”

“Honestly, it’s such a shame,” admits Ulrich Heiden. – We Germans have been trying to teach Russia for 20 years how to build a democratic society, how the media works. Hundreds of articles were ordered from me when there were conflicts with NTV, with Novaya Gazeta, when Politkovskaya died. And based on the events in Odessa, they didn’t order anything from me and didn’t print anything. It doesn't fit in my head. I don't want to criticize my colleagues because they are also under pressure. When you get a job, over time you begin to understand: they don’t print this. And you are faced with a choice: quit or write what is published.”
