The attack took place at the Ankara Contemporary Art Center during the opening of the art photo exhibition “Russia Through the Eyes of the Turks.” Karlov was heading to the podium to give a welcoming speech. An unknown man shot at the diplomat from behind, then reloaded his weapon and fired again. Representatives of the Russian embassy told the publication that the attack was carried out by radical Islamists.
In total, 15–20 shots were fired inside the art gallery in Ankara, according to the Turkish publication, citing eyewitnesses. Soon after all visitors to the event at the Ankara Contemporary Art Center were evacuated, the police carried out a special operation. Witnesses heard 15 to 20 shots.

The man reportedly said something about Aleppo before shooting Karlov, then fired a shot into the air. After the assassination attempt, he pointed a pistol at the visitors and demanded in Turkish that no one come near him. Special police forces shot and killed the ambassador's killer.
Information about the death of the diplomat was confirmed by the Russian Foreign Ministry. This statement was made by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, on the Rossiya 24 TV channel.
“We qualify the incident as a terrorist act, we are in contact with Turkish officials, and we have received assurances that a thorough, comprehensive investigation will be carried out. Today this issue will be raised before the members of the UN Security Council,” Zakharova said.
