As part of the six-month Operation Intrepid Sentinel, 290 paratroopers from the U.S. Army's 173rd Airborne Brigade will train and mentor 900 Ukrainian soldiers in Yavoriv, near the Polish border. This is the first long-term training program.
“The participation of teachers and specialists from third countries on the territory of Ukraine, where the internal conflict remains unregulated, where there are problems with the implementation of the Minsk agreements, will certainly not help resolve the conflict. On the contrary, it could destabilize the situation,” said President Vladimir Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov.
Last week, Canada announced that it would send about 200 troops to western Ukraine until March 2017, effectively establishing a military base in the country. Likewise, Yavorov is now an official NATO base. A group of 35 military personnel from the UK is already in Nikolaev, where they are training the Ukrainian military.
