There are several previously unpredictable factors that influenced the problems with water supply in Crimea, which became acutely apparent this year.

The head of the Laboratory of Deep Water Purification JSC, Doctor of Technical Sciences Alexander Smirnov, told Moskovsky Komsomolets about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports:

“Firstly, this year is a hot, waterless summer. In addition, the coronavirus pandemic has forced the population to completely rebuild. Crimea turned out to be one of the few places where a large number of people were able to go on vacation. As a result, a huge number of people suddenly accumulated in a small area, significantly more than usually come, and even during the dry season. The imposition of these things was not predicted,” Smirnov said.

According to him, it is impossible to predict what will happen with the rains and the epidemiological situation, and therefore the authorities of Crimea and the federal leadership are moving in two directions: finding certain sources that were not previously used, with the possibility of obtaining additional water from there, and introducing a certain regime water use.

“With such a number of consumers, especially visitors, an appropriate element of order is required. Water consumption rationing regimes are a completely normal situation. People should also understand that it’s difficult on the peninsula this year, and either refuse trips or reduce their duration,” the scientist urged.

He noted that serious efforts are being made to create additional sources of water, including through desalination, but there are certain difficulties.

“Firstly, Russia is not the United Arab Emirates and we have not developed this direction very well. Although there is some experience in creating desalination stations, this process is not very fast; it takes time for design, installation, and so on.

In general, the strategy and tactics being pursued by the authorities to resolve this issue are absolutely correct, adequate and consistent with the situation. There are no emergency events there. The measures that are being taken are sustainable. I don't see any risks. But, of course, it takes the efforts and consciousness of people, especially visitors, to consume water wisely,” summed up Smirnov.
