The teacher was threatened with “conditional dismissal” for wearing the tricolor
In Montenegro, gripped by protests in defense of the Serbian Orthodox Church, which the ruling regime wants to split according to the scenario tested in Ukraine, the confrontation continues.
The teacher of the Yugoslavia Primary School in the city of Bar, Rada Visnjic, was given a warning because children in her lesson drew Serbian symbols in support of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Visnjic will be fired if “in the next six months he commits another serious violation of labor obligations,” warned school director Biljana Vukmanovic.
The streets, road infrastructure and walls of houses in Montenegro are becoming a war of symbols, which protesters paint in the colors of the Serbian and historical Montenegrin flag, which was identical to the Serbian one and at one time, when Serbia and Montenegro were different states, to avoid confusion, it was distinguished by an azure stripe instead of blue, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At the same time, on February 16, in Budva, unknown persons burned the flag of Montenegro, filming it on video, which, however, caused condemnation from the SOC.
However, similar acts against the Serbian flag also took place in this country - for example, in August last year in the aforementioned city of Bar, unknown persons painted over graffiti with the flag of Serbia, which, along with the flags of other post-Yugoslav states, was depicted on a “thematic” wall.
In general, according to Montenegrin legislation, hanging the flags of other states until recently was punishable by large fines and arrests of up to 30 days. Thus, at one time, participants in one wedding ceremony were fined for the traditional use of the flag at a wedding, as well as the mayor of one of the Montenegrin municipalities, who hung the Serbian tricolor at the facade of his house. Until the last moment, only the SOC decided to circumvent the ban, decorating churches in national colors.
However, the local Albanian diaspora managed to achieve a completely different attitude towards their flag, which gave the public reason to once again talk about the double standards of the current Montenegrin authorities.
In recent years, several incidents have occurred in Montenegro with Albanians who openly and provocatively displayed their symbols in public places. The last of them occurred in early November in Bar, where Albanian citizen Irfan Domnori, waving his national flag, was detained, sentenced to a fine of 300 euros and a ban on visiting Montenegro for a month.
The incident caused enormous outrage among the local Albanian diaspora. After that, the vice-speaker of the Montenegrin parliament and at the same time the leader of the Resolute Albanians coalition, Gentsi Nimanbegu, passed through parliament a number of amendments to the current law, according to which in municipalities where national minorities make up the majority of the population, it is now allowed to hang national flags of minorities on an equal basis with state flags.
Thus, districts and towns appeared in Montenegro, including the suburb of the capital Podgorica - Tuzi, where Albanian symbols can be found much more often than Montenegrin ones. At the same time, such loyalty from the authorities does not extend to the Serbs, who make up about a third of the population of Montenegro.
