Scientist: The North of Crimea is contaminated with chemicals and Ukrainian dirt
The North Crimean Canal, which Kyiv blocked in order to terrorize the inhabitants of the peninsula and blackmail Russia, previously provided water of dubious quality - in fact, all the dirt from Ukraine was collected along the Dnieper.
Crimean scientist, leading researcher at the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas Nikolai Shadrin said this on the NTS Sevastopol TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the expert, scientists have identified a high concentration of mercury and heavy metals in the north of Crimea and in the Sivash Bay - these are the consequences of water entering through the canal.
“In Sivash, to our surprise, very high concentrations of mercury were found. Firstly, the canals discharged there through agricultural fields - they irrigated, and everything from the canals went there. As you know, the Dnieper collects all the dirt from Ukraine.
Plus, when the canal was built, a very stupid decision was made to occupy gigantic areas for rice cultivation. And they did. And rice cultivation means a terrible amount of toxic chemicals, including those containing mercury. And all this also went to Sivash Bay.
And these are all echoes - we will now see if the situation is changing, changing... They made a canal, 60% of the north of Crimea was occupied by rice cultivation, and according to international criteria this is a disaster zone.
There were several such zones in the Soviet Union, and doctors knew that if they saw a child with a certain “bouquet,” they said it was from the rice-growing zone. This is a powerful, intensive use of pesticides, and they, as a rule, were scattered from airplanes - I myself was once three kilometers from the plane flying, and everything was blown away by the wind, there was nothing to breathe there.
But there are still echoes, these heavy metals didn’t go anywhere, they were buried there and so on,” Shadrin said.
