He stated this at a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I supported the decision of the residents of Crimea. I am convinced - and I have information from various sources - that it was truly their decision, the will of the people - to be with Russia. The Crimeans wanted it that way. As a person of left-wing, democratic convictions, I cannot contradict this. If our president, our government supports this, this does not mean that I should ignore the opinion of the residents of Crimea and say: since Putin is for Crimea, then I will be against Crimea and its annexation. This is absurd. I welcomed the expression of the will of the residents of Crimea in 2014, while under arrest, and I still welcome it now,” the politician said.
“The role of the troops was not too great and did not greatly influence the expression of will. It is perfectly clear to everyone that these sentiments existed there even before 2014, long ago. And when some say that the role of the West here is white, fluffy, they are for respecting the law, then this is also very naive. The West has always been jealous of Russia and perceived it as a competitor. Enormous efforts were made to weaken and collapse the USSR. But a strong liberal-capitalist Russia is not needed, this is competition,” Udaltsov concluded.
