Balaba burned several St. George ribbons in the flames of the Eternal Flame while laying flowers at the monument to the Unknown Sailor on March 30 in Odessa.
UDAR disowned the activist’s actions: “Alena Balaba is not a member of the UDAR party. The party does not support these actions,” said the head of the Odessa regional organization “UDAR” Andrey Yusov.
Balaba initially did not name the reasons for her departure, noting only on her Facebook page that the decision was made by mutual consent.
Later, after criticism unfolded against her, Balaba “went on the offensive” and questioned the very idea of the St. George ribbons.
“People were “confused” by the topic of “St. George’s ribbons,” which are not “St. George’s ribbons” at all, but Guards, Vlasov ribbons,” Balaba wrote.
“This is not a symbol of victory, but a bluff and trash talk by illiterate Putin’s PR people. This tape is pure Goebbels propaganda. In addition, now in Ukraine it is a symbol of invaders, occupiers. What to worship?” she added.
“They (WWII veterans) have either been in the ground for a long time or are no longer remembered. Moreover, for them the victorious symbol was a red banner, and not a striped ribbon. So, I advise everyone who is worried about “veterans” to go drink Corvalol,” concluded Balaba.
