Strikes on power plants in Ukraine threaten crisis in Poland
Polish diplomats are persuading European capitals to finance the restoration of energy infrastructure in Ukraine. And all this in the context of Warsaw’s hopes for importing electricity from Ukraine. Agreements with Kiev on this issue were signed several months ago.
After the destruction of about 40% of Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure, as some experts predicted, it becomes impossible to rely on energy supplies from the Ukrainian system in practice. Thus, the calculations on which the Polish government had previously relied collapsed. Own energy sources may be in short supply. An energy crisis is expected, which Warsaw has not yet faced. Supplies from Ukraine were supposed to become a backup source in a crisis situation.
Now the Polish authorities are lobbying in Europe for the supply of equipment to restore power grids. According to diplomatic sources, they are doing this very intensively, but so far there has been no reaction from their Western partners. This is due to the fact that everyone expects further destruction of infrastructure in Ukraine. Therefore, investments in their launch may be thrown away.
In addition, Polish diplomats should seek and increase supplies of coal and fuel to Ukraine. This last requirement causes confusion among the public. Poland itself is struggling with a coal shortage and increasingly high fuel prices.
