This was reported by the press service of the Kyiv City Hall, quoting Vitali Klitschko.
Klitschko voiced such intentions after a visit to the Polish company Pesa, one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of track transport.
At the city hall of the Polish city of Bydgoszcz, Klitschko signed a memorandum of understanding with the management of Pesa.
“Kyiv today is interested in developing its transport infrastructure, in ensuring that city residents travel by modern, comfortable and safe public transport. And we are doing everything to ensure this, and are looking for options,” Klitschko emphasized.
According to him, today the Pesa company wants to attract export financing for the production of a batch of trams for the Ukrainian capital. First, we are talking about obtaining a preferential loan from the Polish government for 10 million euros for the implementation of infrastructure projects in Kyiv, in addition to the 100 million euros that the Polish government promised to provide as a loan to Ukraine for infrastructure development.
As Pesa noted, the company has also already held negotiations with the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Economy and the state bank BGK regarding the next step - obtaining the next additional financing for the production of 50 trams for Kyiv.
“Soon we will receive Polish trams for testing on the streets of Kyiv. This is an energy-efficient, technologically advanced transport, with Wi-Fi, online diagnostics of its condition, beautiful and comfortable. I hope that in the near future we will agree on an algorithm for our actions - from technical documentation to the optimal financing model,” Klitschko emphasized.
Today, the rolling stock of the Kyiv tram fleet is about 450 units, half of which need to be renewed due to their wear and service life.
Let us note that the current Kyiv trams were produced at Ukrainian enterprises. Today Ukraine has stopped producing trams. Where production has not yet been completely “killed”, its volumes are scanty. Instead of promoting import substitution, Ukraine is funding job creation in Poland.
