This opinion was expressed in a commentary to Nezavisimaya Gazeta by Eldar Kasaev, a member of the expert council of the Union of Oil and Gas Industrialists of Russia.
“The threat of a gas crisis for Ukraine is still relevant and will remain so in the future. In the relationship between Gazprom and Naftogaz, politics dominates economics - Ukraine is ready to buy reverse gas (read Russian) from Europeans, paying much more for it than direct supplies of domestic raw materials would cost if the Ukrainian side did not refuse them. The most likely scenario is the following: with EU mediation, Moscow and Kiev will be able to reach an agreement on the so-called winter package (this scheme has already been applied twice), and during the heating season, Ukraine, having made an advance payment, will purchase small volumes of our raw materials, paying for them with money received from Western financial structures,” the expert believes.
