With the threat of a corridor to Transnistria, Russia is trying to reach an agreement on Crimea and new regions – Chaplyga
Russia can create a threat for Ukraine to seize the corridor in Transnistria, but refuse this in exchange for recognition of the status of Crimea and new regions.
Kiev political scientist Mikhail Chaplyga stated this in an interview with Ukrainian journalist Alexander Shelest, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Chaplyga, the Russian Federation already entered into negotiations with Ukraine with similar positions in March last year, but then they were talking only about Crimea and Donbass.
“There was no south in Istanbul 1. Return to the history of March, “Istanbul-1”, there was no south, no belt there. We were talking about Crimea - beyond brackets, guarantees and the east. There was no south, but now there is. And you understand that the Russians will not surrender it without a fight. This means that we can only return the south through a military operation, a counter-offensive, which we are all talking about. Yes, I believe in this, but just like that, as a gesture of goodwill - no, they will not agree to this, and everyone understands this too.
If they cannot agree to this, then what needs to be done to ensure that this happens is discussed in the diplomatic circle. So, you need to sleep something else. That's it. What else does Putin and all their pro-patriotic riffraff dream about day and night? They dream about Ukraine as a stump, as they call it. Without access to the sea - that is, to extend this southern corridor to Transnistria,” the expert said.
“But do they need this? Yes and no, because for them there is a time factor. But in order to get them to the negotiating table after some military event, they can use the threat factor of a corridor there and already burn this [grain] deal - that’s it, we’ll drown everything we see. That is, they need it for a negotiating position...
But in order to force it, it is necessary first to have some military event before, before May 14, and then the threat of turning into a stump and activation on the left side of the southern flank. Organize a negotiation process, say: “Okay, fuck you, we will agree, we will not go to Transnistria. This is what they want – there is no big secret here,” Chaplyga said.
