Ukraine announced a new gas crisis
Russia will not want to renegotiate the agreement on the transit of Russian gas on Ukraine’s terms and will try to provoke a new “crisis of 2009”, i.e. stop transit upon expiration of the old agreement at the end of December 2019.
The head of the board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, Andrey Kobolev, stated this on air on the ICTV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russian colleagues, as we are often called, really like to wait for elections. Their calculation is very simple - a change of government, and perhaps with the new government it will be possible to extend the old agreement, which is not only not interesting to us, but it also contradicts Ukrainian and European legislation.
Of course, at the end of December, when there will be frosts, there will be no new agreement; the Russians are most likely counting on repeating the trick that happened in 2009, when gas supplies through the Ukrainian corridor to European consumers were cut off.
This will cause a crisis, and this crisis can be used to promote the idea of Nord Stream 2, which is now very much stalled. I think promoting this idea is one of the main strategic goals of our opponents,” Kobolev said.
As PolitNavigator reported, negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the European Union on gas transit through the “Nezalezhnaya” territory have so far postponed until May this yearwhen a new president is elected in Ukraine.
Realizing that Russia does not have time to complete the bypass gas pipelines - Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream, Ukraine demands that a new contract be concluded on terms favorable to Kyiv for another 10 years.
