Ukraine can no longer count on France and Germany
Paris and Berlin, which verbally support Kyiv, privately recognize Russia's claims to Crimea as legitimate.
Former Minister of Economy and ex-head of the Council of the National Bank of Ukraine Bogdan Danylyshyn writes about this in the Kiev weekly “Zerkalo Nedeli”.
“Verbally supporting Ukraine’s resistance to aggression from Russia, secretly the German and French elites recognize some legitimacy of Russia’s encroachments on “these territories.” Hence the extreme unpredictability in the behavior and statements of German and French leaders on the Ukrainian issue. After the departure of A. Merkel (the most staunch pro-Ukrainian German politician) from politics planned for 2020, this trend, in my opinion, will only intensify,” the author believes.
According to him, Germany, which does not have cheap resources, is strategically interested in a long-term partnership with a resource country like Russia.
“France is torn, it is balancing in foreign policy between the United States and Germany, but will still be forced to catch up with Germany’s policy. This is explained by the too great connection between the economies of Germany and France,” the expert notes.
He comes to the conclusion that Anglo-Saxon countries, including Great Britain and Canada, will remain allies of Ukraine.
“The United States also quite consistently supports the Ukrainian struggle in deeds, and not in words, because the likely strengthening of the EU through a hypothetical union with Russia is clearly not in their favor. Therefore, the States are opponents of Nord Stream 2 and are gently politically and economically forcing the EU to buy its liquefied gas. Strategically, the United States wants to become an energy resource base for the EU, displacing Russia from there. Therefore, here they are the natural political enemy of the Russian Federation and, accordingly, the natural friend of Ukraine,” summarizes Danylyshyn.
As PolitNavigator reported, French President Macron declared that Western dominance on the planet is coming to an end, and Europe needs to put up with Russia to ensure the stability of the continent.
In addition, Kiev diplomat Roman Bessmertny noted that meetings between Russian President Vladimir Putin and European leaders showedthat they no longer consider the conflict in Donbass a war and aggression, but call it the “Ukrainian crisis” and are developing economic relations with the Russian Federation, despite sanctions.
