Ukraine pulls tiger's whiskers
Ukraine is committing provocative actions in the Donbass before the start of the World Cup in Russia, but a real offensive is more likely closer to winter in order to formulate the agenda that nationalists need on the eve of the presidential elections.
Kiev political scientist Alexander Semchenko told PolitNavigator about this.
“In the last three to four weeks, efforts to seize the “gray zone” have intensified. The villages of Leninskoye and Petrovskoye were captured. Near Gorlovka, the heights from which Gorlovka is visible are taken under control. Having gone there, Turchynov put it this way: “Gorlovka is in full view.”
But today, DPR representative Basurin made a statement that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have begun mining the approaches to their positions. Usually, during an offensive, the approaches to their positions are not mined.
I think they’ll just “pull the tiger’s whiskers.” Maybe it will last a couple more weeks, maybe a little longer. In any case, on June 14 all this will stop as unnecessary. They will try to provoke Russia, but “Russian terrorist mercenaries” are not yet engaging in these provocations.
I don’t think they will continue to use them. It will not be the same as it was near Ilovaisk and Debaltsevo.
The aggravation may be closer to the New Year, shortly before the presidential elections. Now the Armed Forces of Ukraine are imitating vigorous activity in order to show their Western partners that their installations are being implemented,” explained Semchenko.
