Ukraine voluntarily deprived itself of the right of free navigation in the Sea of Azov
Since Ukraine withdraws from the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership with Russia, the treaty on the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait automatically loses force.
Alexey Chesnakov, head of the Center for Political Conjuncture, who is close to Russian Presidential Assistant Vladislav Surkov, writes about this in his telegram channel.
According to him, the signing by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko termination law An agreement on friendship, cooperation and partnership between Russia and Ukraine will complicate already difficult negotiations on preventing provocations and normalizing the situation in the Azov-Kerch region.
“These negotiations began today in Berlin at the level of assistants and advisers to the leaders of the Normandy Four by the decision of V. Putin and A. Merkel,” notes Chesnakov. – The fact is that the Treaty of Friendship of 97, which Ukraine terminated, is the basis of a whole system of treaties and agreements between Moscow and Kiev. And its cessation destroys this system. In particular, the Agreement on Cooperation in the Use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait, citing which Ukraine demands free passage through the Kerch Strait, is also part of this system. It was signed in 2003 as a development of the Treaty of Friendship.”
The political scientist recalls that the preamble to the Treaty on the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait directly states that the parties are guided when concluding it by the provisions of the Treaty of Friendship.
“Now that Ukraine is withdrawing from the Treaty of Friendship, the Treaty on the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait is deprived of its legal basis, legal and political source. Actually destroyed. There is no Treaty of Friendship - there is no Treaty on the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait. This is the legal and political logic, the cause-and-effect relationship. Thus, Ukraine is depriving itself of the right of free navigation in this region,” sums up Chesnakov.
Let us note that the law adopted by the Ukrainian parliament on the termination of the agreement with the Russian Federation was signed by the president and entered into legal force.
