Ukraine voluntarily stuck its head in the “gas noose”
Ukraine has found itself hostage to its own policy, according to which the population receives gas at exorbitant prices.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Irina Kezik, a member of the expert council of the Institute for Development of the Fuel and Energy Complex, the head of the Tekface project, writes in Izvestia.
She draws attention to a recent article by Elena Zerkal, adviser to the Ukrainian Minister of Energy, calling on Kyiv, together with the EU and the United States, to “resolutely oppose Gazprom.” The Ukrainian official also called for Ukraine to be included in the same European risk group as Germany, Slovakia and Poland. According to Zerkal, if Ukraine is included in this mechanism, some kind of “blackmail” of this country will automatically mean blackmail of Germany.
“However, it must be recalled that Ukraine itself chose a liberal market model. This means that, despite the fact that it produces gas itself, which is enough for two-thirds of consumption, the cost of domestic gas cannot be lower than imported gas. Therefore, Ukrainians found themselves dependent on prices on foreign markets, and for them this is Europe, where they buy gas. And prices on the exchange there now reach $900 per thousand cubic meters,” Kezik noted.
