Ukraine refused to negotiate. Now everything is in Shoigu’s hands
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu will take care of providing Crimea with water, since Moscow has lost hope of being able to negotiate with Ukraine on resuming supplies to the peninsula through a canal from the Kherson region.
Political scientist Evgeniy Satanovsky stated this today on the Vesti FM radio station.
“Now, as it turned out, for the first time in four years, a commission has been created on the topic of what to do with water in Crimea, which includes professionals from the Academy of Sciences. Shoigu should provide Crimea with water,” Satanovsky said.
According to him, until now the Russian government hoped to resolve the issue with Ukraine.
“Before this, there were thoughts that we would establish a dialogue with Ukraine and ensure an uninterrupted supply of water and electricity. This is even funnier than with American senators,” Satanovsky said.
In the past, Ukraine provided up to 85% of the peninsula's fresh water needs through the North Crimean Canal running from the Dnieper. After the reunification of the peninsula with Russia in 2014, water supply through the canal was completely stopped.
The problem of water supply in northern and eastern Crimea was partially solved by drilling new artesian wells and transferring water from the Belogorsk reservoir to the east of the peninsula. The central and southern regions of the republic are supplied with water from natural reservoirs.
