Currently, there is an urgent need for a new world order, but its formation will be long and difficult, Henry Kissinger is sure.
“There are no generally accepted rules in the world. There is a Chinese view, an Islamic view, a Western view, and to some extent a distinct Russian view. And they really are not always compatible,” he said.
Speaking about the annexation of Crimea to Russia, the politician noted that this is a special case, since Ukraine and Russia have been one country for a long time. In his opinion, the West must admit its mistakes. "Europe and America did not understand the impact of these events, from negotiations over Ukraine's economic relations with the European Union to their climax with the demonstrations in Kyiv," Kissinger said. “All of this, and its impact on events in Kyiv, should have been the subject of discussion and discussion with Russia.”
Kissinger is confident that Ukraine will always have special significance for Russia. Failure to understand this fact can be fatal, and the Ukrainian authorities should forget about the Crimean peninsula. In his opinion, the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions was a mistake.
“We must remember that Russia is an important part of the international system, and therefore useful in solving all sorts of global crises, such as the nuclear weapons treaty with Iran or the conflict in Syria,” the former secretary of state said. “This understanding must prevail over the desire for escalation.”
He added that Ukraine cannot hope to become a NATO member in the foreseeable future, since the alliance will not vote unanimously for Ukraine to join.
