Ukraine costs the EU dearly, but Russia suffers little - Borrell
The whole world is paying for the conflict in Ukraine, which has plunged into galloping inflation and rising energy and food prices.
EU diplomacy head Josep Borrell stated this in an interview with the foreign agent resource “Current Time,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At the same time, Borrell said that despite the costs, EU members must continue to support Ukraine.
“If Ukrainians resist, we must support them. For us, this has its price, but much less than the price that Ukrainians and, excuse me, Russians pay for it. This war is a shame for the whole world, the whole world is paying a high price for it. Rising prices for electricity, energy, food, galloping inflation, weak economic growth - everyone in the world is paying for the consequences of Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine,” the European diplomat said.
He admitted that Russia has not suffered as much from sanctions as Westerners would like.
“Last year was good for Russia because energy prices skyrocketed. In July-August we paid 300 euros per megawatt/hour of electricity - 6-10 times more than before the war. And we are still dependent on Russian oil and gas, we continued to buy them at the highest prices, so they made good money,” Borrell regrets.
