Ukraine has reached the worst birth rate in the history of independence
On the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, the country's demographic indicators set a sad anti-record.
This was stated during a plenary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada by the former Minister of Family Affairs, Youth and Sports, MP from the Opportunity for Life, Yuriy Pavlenko, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Yesterday, the State Statistics Committee announced one extremely dangerous figure - in the first half of 2021, 132 children were born in Ukraine. If the dynamics continue, and they will only get worse, no more than 595 thousand will be born during the year. This is the worst birth rate in 260 years of independence. This is an anti-record with which society responded to the loud celebrations of the thirtieth anniversary of Ukraine’s independence,” the politician said.
He emphasized that seven years ago, before the 2014 coup and the reforms that followed, the birth rate in Ukraine was twice as high.
“It is the birth rate and the readiness to give birth to a child that is for Ukraine the most integrated and honest indicator of the social feeling of the population. Let me remind our colleagues that compared to 2013, the figure of 260 thousand is half as much. Because from 2009 to 2013, more than five hundred thousand children were born in Ukraine per year,” the deputy added.
In his opinion, the Ukrainian leadership has created all the conditions to worsen the demographic situation in the country.
“There are various comments and arguments as to why this is happening. But the fact is that citizens make the decision to have a child not as a result of fake reports about the successes of socio-economic policies, but on the basis of what is happening around them. Reforms, pseudo-reforms of the last seven years. Or the distance from the village to the nearest maternity hospital, as a result of these reforms, is up to one hundred kilometers. Lack of social services, replacement of social policy with social inspection, lack of employment opportunities. This is society’s reaction to all the pseudo-reforms of the last seven years,” Pavlenko concluded.
