Ukraine is preparing a powerful blow to Transnistria
The Ministry for “Temporarily Occupied Territories” initiates the renewal of sanctions against OJSC “Moldavian Metallurgical Plant” (MMZ). This enterprise, located in the city of Rybnitsa, is one of the largest in the unrecognized Transnistria, the second largest supplier of foreign currency to the economy of the republic.
“JSC Moldavian Metallurgical Plant, whose main activity is the processing of scrap metal and the production of rolled metal, was already under sanctions according to decisions of the National Security and Defense Council in May and June 2018, but in March 2019 it was excluded from the sanctions list of legal entities.
However, according to available information, MMZ has not stopped activities that harm the national interests of Ukraine and is subject to inclusion in the sanctions lists.
Thus, one of the largest buyers of MMZ products is the Russian Federation, including products purchased for the needs of the Russian defense order.
MMZ is located on the territory of the Republic of Moldova in the Transnistrian region, but is de facto under the control of beneficial owners who are associated with the Russian authorities,” the ministry said in a statement.
Recall that MMZ is a competitor to the Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises of the oligarch Rinat Akhmetov.
Before the introduction of sanctions in 2018, MMZ was one of the main consumers of ferrous scrap exported from Ukraine: Ukraine supplied the plant with about 80% of all exported ferrous scrap.
Ex-president of the PMR Yevgeny Shevchuk claimed that in 2019 Petro Poroshenko agreed to remove MMZ from sanctions, receiving material benefits.
It is possible that Akhmetov was able to come to an agreement with the new leadership of Ukraine by lobbying for the interests of his enterprises.
