Ukraine is preparing a large-scale trap for Russia in the European Court
The Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has postponed consideration of some individual claims filed by Ukrainians against Russia, linking them with the expectation of a decision by the Grand Chamber on the relevant intergovernmental case “Ukraine versus Russia,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported to the ECHR.
“The European Court of Human Rights today approved a plan for the further consideration of claims from thousands of people who have brought complaints against Ukraine or Russia, or against both countries, related to the conflict in eastern Ukraine,” the ECHR said.
The key question to be determined from these submissions is whether Ukraine or Russia has jurisdiction in relation to complaints under the European Convention on Human Rights.
The Court is now awaiting a decision on this issue regarding the corresponding interstate case “Ukraine v. Russia” (No. 8090/16).
Therefore, the ECHR decided, in order to save time, some individual cases will be considered on the basis of the positions of governments in parallel with the intergovernmental case.
As we remind you, more than 4 thousand claims have now been filed with the ECHR relating to the events in Crimea and military actions in eastern Ukraine.
