Ukraine wants non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has asked the United Nations to support the country's request to grant it the status of a non-permanent member of the Security Council. During the meeting, 238 deputies voted for the corresponding statement, with the required minimum of 226 votes.

“We confirm Ukraine’s unconditional devotion and readiness to continue to make a significant contribution to the fulfillment of the task engraved in the UN Charter of saving future generations from the scourge of war,” the statement says.
On September 15, the 70th session of the UN General Assembly opened in New York. It is expected that elections of a new composition of non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for the period 2016-2017 will be held in October.
At the end of May, Ukraine's permanent representative to the UN, Yuriy Sergeev, announced the country's membership in the Security Council. He pointed out that the republic has no competitors in the regional group from which Ukraine is going to run. According to Sergeev, “to be elected, Ukraine needs to receive the support of 2/3 of the votes (at least 128), depending on the number of people present in the meeting room of the UN General Assembly.” According to the permanent representative, Kyiv’s goal “is more ambitious, we want to gain more support than 2/3 of the votes, this gives more legitimacy.”
Elections for non-permanent members of the Security Council for 2015-2016 were held on October 16, 2014. Then the Security Council included Angola, Venezuela, Spain, Malaysia and New Zealand. In the election process, which was held in the General Assembly by secret ballot, five countries received the required two-thirds of the votes of representatives of 193 states.
The UN Security Council has 15 seats, five of which are occupied by permanent members with veto power - Russia, the United States, China, Great Britain and France. The remaining ten seats are distributed every two years on a rotation basis between other UN member countries.
