This information was voiced by the former head of the department of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, Yevgeny Oleynikov, on Radio Liberty, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Through Russian transit, Ukraine simultaneously loses leverage over the Russian Federation in matters of its own transit to the CIS countries, countries of Central Asia and further to China. And although Ukraine has already filed several lawsuits with the World Trade Association, we must understand that the court does not have the proper means of pressure that could force another country to comply with its decisions.
As a rule, the court's decision is based on the fact that the country that filed the claim in court, in order to satisfy it, can use counter-restrictive measures against the other party. Accordingly, the less transit we have with the Russian Federation, the less ways we have to influence Russia on a reciprocal basis. “You don’t let us through, we don’t let you through,” said Yevgeny Oleynik.
