Ukraine can only be a satellite, but not a “strategic partner” of the United States - political scientist
In principle, there can be no strategic partnership between Washington and Kiev, due to the disparate role of both countries in world politics.

This opinion was expressed in a comment to “PolitNavigator” by Kiev political scientist, director of the Social Communications Agency Sergei Belashko, commenting on the participation of Pentagon head J. Matisse and NATO soldiers in the military parade in Kyiv in honor of Ukraine’s Independence Day.
“There cannot be a strategic partnership between Washington and Kiev in principle. The US strategic partnership can be with Britain, Japan, India, France. With some equal magnitudes. But there cannot be a strategic partnership between the United States and Ukraine, Lithuania, Romania and even South Korea because these values are incomparable. Ukraine can only be a satellite of the United States, i.e. move in orbit under some kind of cover, be used in some functions, etc. I think that it would be a stretch to call Poland a strategic partner of the United States. And in this fairly compact region, it is simply inappropriate for the Americans to have two strategic partners. And any attempts by Ukraine to establish itself in this capacity will cause colossal tension in Polish-Ukrainian relations,” he said.
At the same time, the political scientist has his own version of why the Americans needed such a demonstrative gesture as talking about a “strategic partnership” with Kiev.
“First of all, it is a demonstration of your presence. Demonstration, as they say, of one’s flag in this region, which is important for American foreign policy. This is the primary task of Mattis’s visit, just as in the case of the construction of a naval center near Ochakov, which will not be developed into a full-fledged military base simply because there is no objective need for it,” Belashko concluded.
