Moscow - Kyiv, September 17 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) - On the territory of Ukraine there are large uranium deposits, nuclear power units where it is possible to enrich nuclear fuel, as well as enterprises where ballistic missiles were produced during the USSR. All these factors will allow Ukraine to create nuclear weapons within 10 years, according to Russian experts interviewed by Izvestia.

“The statement by Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Geletey about the possibility of returning Ukraine to the status of a nuclear power and creating weapons of mass destruction is a provocation, but it must be taken seriously,” says Franz Klintsevich, deputy chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on Defense. “We must not forget that science in Ukraine has always been developed, from this point of view the creation of a nuclear bomb will not cause problems.”

To create a nuclear bomb, Ukraine needs enriched uranium, explains Klintsevich. There are 17 nuclear power units on the territory of the state, although they are not intended for enrichment. “If they release several power units and start solving this problem, the process will take a long time. But in 10 years they will cope with it,” the deputy believes.

“Ukraine inherited significant potential from the USSR. These are nuclear technologies used for peaceful purposes and nuclear scientists. They don’t need to start from scratch,” says military expert Andrei Klenov. “In addition, in Western Ukraine and mostly in Eastern Ukraine there are factories where Satan missiles were produced. Before the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, these factories were mothballed, and all technical documentation, drawings and technologies were transported to Kyiv.”

In addition, Ukraine has Tochka U, a tactical system that uses conventional ballistic missiles with a range of 120 km or more. These missiles are also capable of carrying nuclear warheads, the newspaper recalls.

Let us recall that on September 14, Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Geletey announced the possibility of developing nuclear weapons if the West refuses to help Ukraine: “If we cannot protect [Ukraine] today, if the world does not help us, we will be forced to return to the creation of these weapons that will protect from Russia"

Representatives of the IAEA, as well as the US Ambassador to Ukraine, refused to comment on the possible consequences of Ukraine becoming a nuclear power.
