In Ukraine, a catastrophic situation has developed in the field of nuclear energy - in recent years, nuclear power plants have not undergone any modernization and have only postponed routine maintenance.

Verkhovna Rada deputy Evgeniy Muraev stated this on TV channel 112, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, the country may lose this industry in the near future, and if Ukraine is accepted into the EU, it will have to close all its thermal power plants and switch to exporting electricity at European prices.
“We will now get the construction of a repository (for nuclear waste - Ed.) on our territory. We have a generally catastrophic situation in nuclear energy. Regulations have been extended for a long time, and no work has been carried out. And this will really hit our industry very hard in the next 5-10 years. Unlike in 13, when we exported a huge amount of electricity, today we are on the threshold of the moment when we will have to buy it at European prices, because neither the IAEA nor everyone else will extend regulations for us and will not allow us to work everything that was built during Soviet times. This requires modernization... And if we still join the European Union, then all our thermal power plants, which also generate electricity, will not pass the quality standards and are harmful to the environment. We are actually now on the verge of losing an entire industry,” said Muraev.
