Ukraine hopes to replace Russia and Belarus in the European market
Ukraine can begin supplies both to the EU and to the domestic market of products that were previously exported by Russia and Belarus.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this in an interview with the Kyiv online publication Zerkalo Nedeli, the deputy head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Economic Development, Dmitry Kisilevsky, said.
He was asked which groups of goods previously supplied by the Russian Federation and Belarus could be replaced by Ukraine on the domestic market and on the markets of European countries.
“On the Ukrainian market for processed industry products, imports from Russia and Belarus averaged $11 billion per year. This is in addition to energy and minerals. These countries supplied the European Union with processing industry products worth an average of $25 billion,” said the head of the Rada committee.
According to him, Ukraine can “completely replace the vast majority of these imports with its own production.”
“These are products made of ferrous metals, woodworking products, chemical products, polymer materials. For example, annually Russia supplied the EU with $0,5 billion worth of rapeseed oil. And we export exclusively rapeseed to the EU. That is, for us this could be a simple successful case. We can process the seeds into oil at home and replace Russian products in Europe,” the deputy added.
He noted that Ukraine imported a large volume of petroleum products from Russia and Belarus.
“We need to work in this direction. Now we can replace the production of fertilizers and polymer products.
An interesting example is flat glass. Until last year, we met about 70% of our needs with glass produced in Russia or Belarus. In an era of large-scale restoration of destroyed property, we will need to take care of this. After all, the demand for glass will be huge. And it’s best that we satisfy him with our production,” summarized Kisilevsky.
