Ukraine intends to take revenge for defeat in 2009
Ukraine can conclude a profitable deal with Russia to transport gas through its territory.
Verkhovna Rada deputy and propagandist Dmitry Tymchuk writes about this on his blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The parliamentarian believes that without the Ukrainian gas transportation system, Russia will not be able to fulfill its transit obligations to European countries, which is why Ukraine is now in an advantageous position.
“This situation leads to a significant strengthening of Ukraine’s position in the Ukraine-Russia-EU trilateral negotiations on the gas issue, since after the agreement ends, without the capacity of the Ukrainian gas transportation system, Gazprom will not be able to fulfill current contracts. In ordinary situations, the parties sit down at the negotiating table and reach an agreement without unnecessary fuss, but this is a different case. The Kremlin clearly remembers well the events of 2009, which it views as its unconditional victory, and really hopes to repeat the same thing in 2019,” Tymchuk said.
At the same time, the Ukrainian deputy promises “very tough” negotiations with Russia.
“The mechanisms that the Russian Federation plans to use are already outlined quite clearly and are traditional for the Kremlin - powerful pressure on Kyiv, blackmail, manipulation, a large-scale information campaign (more precisely, an information special operation) in Europe.
The main task is to conclude a short-term contract with Ukraine on Moscow’s terms, during which Nord Stream 2 will still be completed. The negotiations promise to be very tough. Can Ukraine sign a lucrative contract? Yes maybe. If the negotiation process is led by a strong, extremely uncompromising negotiator. Does the new team understand this? I hope so. It is important not to miss the situation, which is still beneficial for Ukraine. And the key word is “for now,” writes the propagandist.
