Ukraine made the EU and NATO laugh
Kyiv is putting itself in a stupid position by trying to enshrine in the Constitution the course of joining NATO and the EU, where no one invited Ukraine.
Deputy Viktor Bondar stated this at a meeting of the Conciliation Council of faction leaders and chairmen of committees of the Verkhovna Rada, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Today, for the sake of elections, we are being asked to add and remove questions from the Constitution, like from a school notebook – whether we prescribe joining NATO and the EU or not. I understand that elections are going on, that someone needs to make a big PR out of this, and then tell them that the Constitution stipulates joining NATO and the EU. But this does not mean that we were invited there. We look funny in front of the EU and NATO - we decided for them where we are already entering,” the politician said.
He noted that such important issues should be resolved through referendums and cited the example of the British referendum on leaving the EU.
“Look how Croatia treated it. In 2012, they held a national referendum on joining the EU. The President of Switzerland proposed holding a referendum in which citizens themselves decide on cooperation with the EU. In 2008, Georgia held a referendum on joining NATO, 77% of citizens supported such an initiative. Therefore, we propose to vote on the law on a referendum and on March 31, together with the presidential elections, to hold a referendum on joining NATO and the EU,” Bondar suggested.
