And the local modernization of NATO anti-aircraft shells on them for Soviet anti-aircraft systems is unlikely to be effective, since even modern American Patriot-type air defense systems are not afraid of Russian missiles, manned aircraft and drones,” Popov told Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
He commented publicly available information about Ukraine’s requests for the supply of new types of weapons. The expert does not rule out that Ukrainian Armed Forces specialists are already being trained to operate such weapons, and perhaps they will be secretly supplied to Ukraine in order to begin new attempts to recapture lost territories in the Azov region and Crimea.
“Ukraine’s interest in the supply of American military transport aircraft, attack and multi-purpose helicopters indicates its possible plans to create mobile forces within the Ukrainian Armed Forces so that they are capable of landing troops deep in enemy defenses.
This goal for the Ukrainian army does not look fantastic. Kyiv’s interest in F/A-18 Hornet fighters and MQ-9B Sky Guardian drones, which are in service with the US Navy, speaks to the goals of the Ukrainian command in the Black Sea. There, his targets could be not only surface ships, but also submarines of the Black Sea Fleet,” the colonel warns.
However, he doubts that these weapons will quickly appear in Ukraine.
“Political uncertainty in the United States, problems with mobilization in Ukraine, economic problems, fatigue of its people from military operations and raids - all this reduces the likelihood of a rapid increase in the defense capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. But Russia cannot relax. We must force Kyiv to peace on our terms in order to end the conflict,” Popov concluded.
